400-500 CE

After Julian’s death, Christian policies were reinstated and the persecution of Jews intensified in the first part of the 5^th Century. Jews were prohibited from holding public office or building synagogues. 

In the second half of the 5th century, persecution of Jews abated. The material prosperity of Palestine flourished with significant investments made by Christian emperors towards the "Holy Land," including the construction of churches and the encouragement of Christian pilgrimage.

Most authorities turned a blind eye to the prohibitions against the building of synagogues, with several being built during this time, as well as Jews serving as civil servants and local officials in a limited capacity.
