Herod Crucified Jews
Hints of rebellion started to show early in the first century. Weeks before Herod died, in the winter of 4 BCE, he burned alive 40 people because they destroyed the Roman eagle he had placed at the entrance of the Temple. On his death, the Jews rioted in protest of these martyrs. Roman General Varus entered Judea from Syria and crucified 2,000 of the protesters.
Josephus, Antiquities 17.10.10
“Upon this Varus sent a part of his army into the country, to seek out those that had been the authors of the revolt: and when they were discovered, he punished some of them that were most guilty; and some he dismissed. Now the number of those that were crucified on this account were two thousand.”
