Jewish Persecution, Jerusalem Talmud Completed and the Dissolvement of the Sanhedrin
Julian “the Apostate” died in battle during his campaign against the Persians and was succeeded by Jovian, who quickly reinstated Constantine’s Christian policies. Within a short time, Jews living in the empire had lost most of their civil rights. Jewish persecution reached its zenith during the reign of Theodosius II (r. 402-450 CE), causing the dissolution of the Sanhedrin in Tiberias in 425 CE.
Despite the Jews' lack of political independence, literary activity never waned, and the Jerusalem Talmud was completed, along with several other homiletic collections, including Midrash Tanhuma and Midrash Rabbah.
