Byzantine Coin Hoard Found in the City of David

Read while you listen

In the early 2000s, during excavations in the City of David, a coin hoard of 264 coins was discovered, which were minted in 613 CE by the then Emperor Heraclius, a year before the Persian conquest. The coins, in mint condition and therefore never circulated, were discovered in a large Byzantine-period building that was destroyed in 614 CE during the Persian Conquest. The coins, apparently minted in Jerusalem, were most probably designated for military salaries and were hidden in haste.
